Julius Caesar's military career first began when he found escape in the military, serving first in the province of Asia and then in Cilicia when Sulla, the dictator of Rome at the time, ordered the young roman to divorce his wife Cornelia or loose his property. He served in the military of Asia Minor and Hispania where he was awarded the civic crown for saving a life of a citizen in battle in 79 BCE.

After the death of Sulla, Caesar returned to Rome to begin his political career, he relocated to Rhodes to study philosophy but was kidnapped by pirates during his travels in 75 BCE. In careful negotiation with the pirates, Caesar covinced his captors to raise his ransom before organising a naval force to attack them. After the successful attack, the pirates were captures and severely executed.

His military career continued in 74 BCE when he put together a private army and fought the king of Pontus who'd declared war on Rome.

In 60 BCE Julius Caesar joined forces with Pompey and Marus Licinius to form the 1st Triumvirate, cemented by the marriage of Pompey and Caesar's daughter, Julia.

Caesar arrived in Gaul in 58 BCE, leading a series of campaigns to bring the region under the control of the Roman Empire. He recognised the wealth in Gaul and left with his legions. He continued consistently defeating several Gallic tribes where he gained control over the area. Raiding each area of it's contents (slaves, resources and treasure) which he shared with his men in the army. In 52 BCE, the Gallic leaders lead a united Gallic army, launching a wave of violence across Gaul as revenge. Roman soldiers, settlers and merchants were killed in large numbers.

The treasure Caesar and his army collected from plundering Gaul was shared among all men, making him very popular among his army.
